Independent Writing Piece

Students were assigned an independent writing piece last week and I wanted to make sure students and parents continue to have up-to-date information about the work being done in LA. The goal of this writing is to give students freedom of choice about the type of writing they do, while still practicing the skills I am teaching during class. We just finished analyzing and synthesizing a writing process, so students will need to apply that understanding to this project. We are also working to refine understanding of purpose.

Students wrote down the following information in their agenda books or their writer's notebooks:
Audience - peers, parents, teacher (potentially the whole world if their pieces are "publishable" quality)
Criteria for judging - 1. evidence of their process (they will now apply their last project to their writing)
                            2. clear purpose (not just entertain, inform, explain or persuade, but also their topic and their focus is understandable to their audience)
                            3. perfect G.U.M. (grammar, usage, mechanics)
Purpose/Format - up to the student to choose
Due date - November 22nd (must have teacher feedback at some point in their process; cannot expect that to happen the day before the due date)
